I upgraded all 6 speakers in my '01 SE but left the stock amp in place and the transformation was significant. I went with Infinity Kappas in the doors and package shelf. I can't remember what I used in the dash.
As you may have read here before, changing the rear speakers offers minimal improvement. When I kick the sound to the rear of the car, I really can't hear anything. Perhaps because it's so far away. <grin>
IMHO, if you haven't bought the amp yet, try changing the speakers first and see if that gets you where you want to be.
