Every car I've owned will bump up the engine RPM when the A/C compressor is turned on. My experience is that the difference is only a couple of hundred RPM. If your varies by over 500 RPM, you may have another issue somewhere.
I believe that engine RPM is goverened by the engine management computer in most cars, it should compensate for any variations in the resistance exherted on the engine by the compressor. If this is the way the Saab works, and I think it is, your engine computer may be a fry or two short of a Happy Meal.
BTW: I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. I've just owned a bunch of cars. Hope it helps.
