I agree with Anders.
The power steering pump needs engine power to provide boost. I have a couple of other theories:
1. If your car is a manual and she didn't depress the clutch, the momentum of the car would continue to spin the engine. This would have created the illusion that the power steering still functioned...when the car in fact was turned off or stalled.
2. She actually bumped the ignition switch. I have an older, heavier cell phone. I dropped it once at just the right angle and it cut the car off. I was baffled as I rolled to a stop until I looked down.
Is either of these possible?
