Regardless of car or tire, the difference is very apparent after replacing tires that have been "used up", so to speak, with brand new rubber. Michelins tend to stay round longer than most but even after 20 or 30K they have "decayed" little by little, everyday of use. Your butt can't detect the little changes but it can detect the abrubt changes. I suspect that if you replaced your tires with new anything you would detect an increase in smothness and quietness.
That said, I have a 2000 9-3 base that I ran on 16" 3 spoke wheels and 205-50-16 Michelin SX-GTs from about 5000 to 29,000 miles. I went back to the 15 OEM wheels and tires this winter and I must say that I enjoy the 15" setup for the same reasons you mentioned. The car rides much quieter on the highway, is more compliant on bumps, and just feels lighter on its feet and more nimble. I prefer it this way. Big sticky tires are fine for autocrossing and racing but I think a 15" wheel tire/combo is better, more
fun, and possibly even "quicker" than the cutting edge steam roller.
