I had luck getting Saab to pay for parts on a ten year old car. The car was servced at the major intervals by a dealer but the repair was at a non dealer. I was persistant. Don't take no for an answer. Keep saying you want to appeal if they turn you down. I had to say it about 5 times.
Also, I would get a second opinion from a reputable mechanic. Some dealers seem to be less than perfect at diagnostics to say the least. Sometimes the more expensive repair is the repair of first choice. If Saab USA thinks that they might end up paying you can bet they will want to know what is really broken.
