Has anyone renewed their OnStar subscription after the free 1st year?
I'm not sure if it's worth the ~$300 Canadian yearly fee.
Here's my 1 year experience with OnStar:
Pros:
- Good as a yellow page directory. i.e. to get phone number and address of stores, restaurants, etc.
- Good for geting direction headings. i.e. ask OnStar if you are going North or South bound on a street.
- Good for getting distance to your destination. I like to put it in my trip computer to estimate arrival time.
- GPS is cool, in case car gets stolen or can't find it in a mall and OnStar honks the car for you (I never tried this feature).
- Good for directions, if you're out of town. OnStar is handy, when I rent Caddys out of town.
Cons:
- Directions are too slow and often inaccurate. In Metro Toronto, I'd say their directions are accurate about 70% of the time. In Quebec, it was practically useless, because the streets were in French and the OnStar people could not pronounce nor find them.
I'd probably renew, if Onstar was about $100 per year, but not for $300.
I also noticed the turbo whine, when connected to OnStar, through the speakers. I guess the mics are near the engine turbo area.
