EQUIPMENT:
1. fuse taps (radio shack) $1.50 (pack of 4)
2. extra radar detector wire (radio shack) only if you don't want to destroy the stock one
3. wire cutters or dykes
4. your radar detector of course
5. a couple packs of electrical connectors (from anywhere)
PROCEDURE:
1. snip the cigarrette socket end off the radar detector cable.
2. split the two wires away from each other at the end and strip away about 1/8".
3. look at fuse box lid "guide" and determine which fuse is for the cigarrette lighter socket.
4. pull cigarrette lighter socket fuse and put on fuse tap/reinstall fuse.
5. turn ignition to "on", plug output end of radar cable into the radar detector.
6. determine which wire that you stripped previously is "+" and which is ground by touching one to the fuse tap and the other to one of the mounting bolts located around the perimeter of the fuse box. You'll see the radar detector blip on and off when you have the right combination. TURN CAR OFF AND REMOVE KEY.
7. route the wires to your specific tastes. I routed mine along the base of the windshield, down into one of the holes located underneath the drivers side front speaker grill and down through the back of the fuse box. (very easy to do...10 min. tops)
8. install electrical connectors on the stripped wires...spade connector for "+" cable which goes on the fuse tap/fork type connector on the ground wire which will simply mount on one of the aformentioned perimeter bolts.
9. replace fuse box lid/put away tools/start car (if battery isn't dead)/avoid cops in style.
This was done on both a NG900 and a 9-3 to accept a Bel 980 which of course doesn't come with a hardwire kit. The Val-1 and the Escort 8500 I believe have a hardwire kit that is optional.
Have fun
