SAAB / GM mentioned in Wall Street Journal article

Catch the story in yesterday's Wall Street Journal (get it at the library) about how Volvo, Saab and Daimler are testing new models for safety protection in real world rollover accidents (ie, flipping the car at speed or dropping it on its roof from a certain height, or our favorite, hitting a moose), while GM, Ford and to a lesser extent Chrysler insist that a 30 year old test developed by the manufacturers, a static drop something on the roof at an angle test used by NHTSA, is still a sufficient test. Article had a nice picture of a rolled Explorer with a flattened roof.
One interesting defense by the US manufacturers seemed to be that the crushed roof doesn't kill people, they may have already suffered serious enough injuries to be dead in the moments leading up to the rollover. (Duh. Crushed roofs don't kill people, only dead, inattentive drivers cause crushed roofs?) Article points out that Volvo, Saab and Daimler test to make sure that the roof doesn't collapse and cause injury, Volvo using expensive boron steel alloys, and that they are also concerned that a rollover doesn't interfere with side impact and curtain style air bag systems.
The article also pointed out that it will be interesting to see how the internal conflict regarding testing standards resolves itself as the premium brands are absorbed into the larger volume manufacturers. Regression towards the mean, anyone? Keep watching.
