440 is the basic code name for the entire NG 9-3 lineup (IF they indeed call it the 9-3). The breakdowns will be similar to the following.
The First digit (the 4) designates the chassis or vehicle itself.
The second digit will be the trim level or engine level.
The third digit is the number of doors.
The basic sedan will be the 444, the wagon 445, the 9-3X will be the 443, the convertible 442, and on & on.
This is the same code naming system that is used today on the 9-3 and 9-5.
The 9-3 Sedan is the 355, SE conv. 352, etc. The 9-5 sedan breaks down as the 524 (Linear), 574 (Arc), and 584 (Aero). The wagons breakdown the same except the final digit is replaced with a 5 (the wagon is technically a 5 door).
This is the basic idea; I hope that it helped.
Cheers,
Brian.
