I have the same issue, thought it might be that I turned off the AC but not the case. I assume that you can tell if the volume is too low on startup simply by looking at the SID, can you see the CD/Radio info. If so then it is on, if not, it is off. (this is assumption not necessarily fact)I've just learnt to live with this, the sound from it is amazing even with the top down. And the start volume is programable, in the manual as stated in other reply, I guess so that you are not deafened when you first turn it on.
