Ed, I put 200K miles on my '85 900 16v Turbo 3-dr. I have 70K now
on a '98 900S Turbo, this car has Abbott springs, Konis, 16" rims,
and 205/50-16 Bridgestone RE-730s. Some other cool stuff too but I
won't make a shopping list. Last week I did a nice solo demo in a
2002 9-3SE 5-door. It's certainly more powerful than my NG but boy
does that thing pull to the left when you accelerate hard in lower
gears. It's quite pronounced! I was not in wheelspin either, just
accelerating briskly. Apart from that the 9-3 tracked and stopped
straight and true, and seemed very solid- but most brand new cars
will. The ride quality was better, which I would expect from soft-
er stock suspension and 205/55-16s. Being a tall driver the crowd-
ed 9-3 footwell is HIGHLY annoying, that and the chassis reaction
to heavy throttle were my only complaints and in these two areas it is worse than my NG and C900. Did it remind me of my '85 Turbo?
In no way! My NG felt more C900-like when I got back into it and
drove off. None of these newer cars has ever- my opinion- matched
the C900 for steering feel and seat-of-pants driving experience. I
have always lamented that. Sure, we get more power and refinement,
better brakes, etc. But Saabs have lost some character too and the
amazing trustworthiness of the old cars' dynamics. I've been temp-
ted to go back at times but I'll hold off for now. With Saab drop-
ping the hatchback (oh, I mean 3-dr) I'm probably more a candidate
for 9-5 Aero ownership, a good used one! Then I'll probably find a
nice old classic 900. There's just something about a car you can
toss around like a go kart. And has rear seats that fold flat. Ed,
I totally relate to your question.
