Thanks for your input TG! I'm going to try a tech-2 run in a couple of days. Unfortunately, my dealer ($$!) is the only person in Houston with one, and my indy mech has to rely on pulling codes the old fashioned way, via flasher. This state of affairs prevents the on-board reading, which, as you point out, would give me some useful information.
Latest move: ran techron (double dose) through the system til practically empty, then had the fuel filter changed. Its maybe slightly better, but it could just be wishful thinking on my part. Your point about the plugs is also well taken; I didn't ask my mech. specifically, but its possible that he used non-NGK bpr 6 or 7 spec. I'll ask him that next week when I take her in again.
Check engine light came on initially before I had the idle sensor assembly changed, and my mech. pulled codes reading misfire/idle error/fuel supply. He then reset after changing the idler. He's now in the process of trial and erroring through myriad potential ingition and fuel errors in a pretty logical fashion, such that the cheap fixes are eliminated before trying the expensive fixes.
Thanks again
DWS
