And you remind me of a VERY important point. The torque converter absorbs the speed differential when the car is placed into gear. The engine is turning 900rpms and the driveline is turning zero rpms. No big deal, right?
Well what happens if your driveline is turning equivalent to 75mph (steep hill) and your engine is turning 900 when you engage the tranny again. Thats a heck of a shock...much greater than putting in gear at an idle.
You gotta either got to rev the engine to the approximate ground speed or slow down.
