I've had major frustration with local dealerships with regard to my brake pads. Starting at about 25k miles, I was told that they needed a replace. I was told that it was imperative at 35k miles. At 41k, I ordered a set of generic pads from PartsAmerica and installed them myself in about an hour. Total cost = $65 incl. shipping.
Interestingly enough, there was still some life left in the originals (~3-5k miles) and I was pretty ticked but completed the job anyway.
Here's how you can get a *rough* idea.
Jack the car up, take off the right front tire and turn the wheel to the right. Get a flashlight and from all angles, inspect the pads while they're still on the car. Feel free to use a garden hose and brush to rinse the whole area off and get a better look. Repeat on left wheel. (mine wore a little unevenly so you may want to check both wheels)
If you need a set of pads @ 25k, you've really been pounding those brakes. If you wouldn't describe yourself as an aggressive driver, get another opinion. Plenty of independent garages will do a 'free brake inspection' and many will allow you to take a look with the mechanic.
Good luck.
PS> The brakes won't squeal when they're worn out. They will, however, produce a metallic scraping. When you hear this, budget yourself for a new set of rotors too. You really want to avoid getting this far.
