I have a 2001 93 se with 25,000 miles on it. On a recent trip to the dealer for a tire rotation and oil change, the tech told me that my front brake pads were at ~5mm and should be replaced soon. I thought that this was kind of soon to replace pads (mostly highway miles), so I sought a second opinion from an independent SAAB repair shop. I have heard other gripes in this forum about early brake pad wear.

The independent shop raised the car, DID NOT REMOVE THE TIRES, shined a flashlight from underneath the car and told me that I needed new pads AND ROTORS!!!!!!!! Is it possible to accurately determine brake pad/Rotor wear without removing the tire?? Also, the independent would not take off the tire unless I was going to get it serviced by him. Pretty much turned me off on this shop! Any thoughts?

Getting the pads changed at the dealer today.
