I had the guys at Car Toys put in a Pioneer XM add-on system, plus change out the (standard) dash speakers on my 99 9-3s with Infinity 6.5" coaxes in the doors. As I tend to drive b/w Houston and Dallas a lot, it seemed like a good bang for the buck move.
Lemme tell you.. its freakin' awesome! The XM clarity is just untouchable - its better than most of the burned CDs I normally use (I'm not a pirate, its just that I have bad luck with keeping original CDs is good shape in my car). In addition, the stations themselves are well concieved - particularly in the Rock sector; you can, for example get a nice stream of say, 80's Post punk and New Wave all the way to 90's indie and grunge without having to listen to Creed every other song or having your buzz ruined by the odd Def Leppard hit. Also, the inclusion of BBC, CNNFn, ESPN et al, obviate the need to put up with AM to get your info dose.
Also, the addition of some quality speakers in the doors made a huge difference. I would have liked to have gone the route of adding an amp, but the cost factors start getting out of control; The amp overcomes more resistance, making seperates more attractive, and so on and so on.
I'd say for around $420 installed, plus 10 bucks a month subscription, XM and a decent set of door-mounted coaxials make a cost-effective way to improve extended Saab sessions.
