Is the stock pre-out 2 or 4 channel?

I've noticed that a lot of upgraders here have tended to run the preout to a 2 channel (perhaps plus a sub), leaving the factory head to run the rears. Is there a reason no one has pre-outed to a four channel?
In related news, don't try just replacing the four speakers with 6.5's in the doors and better 6x9's in the rear. I just found out the hard way that the stock setup ran 8ohm fronts and 4 ohm rears; replacing all with 4ohm aftermarket speakes means that the head unit expends all of its power overcoming the added resistance in the (closer) fronts, leaving next to nothing to push along the long wires to the new rears. This sucks, esp. after springing for four perfectly good new speakers.
