Sudden/rapid coolant loss

Our 1999 9-3 (approx. 27,000 miles) seems to have developed a problem with coolant. About a week ago, began getting a low coolant level message on the SID. Called dealer's service department, which advised me to add some water until I could get vehicle in to them. This is good and bad - it makes the warning go away and leads to forgetting that there's a problem). My wife usually drives the car - she was driving it today and apparently had the check engine message come on, then experienced sluggishness. She got someone to add coolant (apparently at least 3/4 of a gallon of coolant straight, with no water).
Soon thereafter, she parked the car to visit a friend. When we drove home (approximately 3-4 miles) from there a few hours later, she had smoke/steam coming from under the hood, strong odor of coolant, and the coolant reservior was empty. I was able to again add about 3/4 gallon coolant/water mix, with the engine running.
So, I'm suspecting there must be a leak in the system somewhere, but it's not obvious from what I could see from above. Any suggestions as to where such a leak might be, and why? (I'm a bit irked,as I had the car in for a 20K mile service in mid-June (I had oil changed around 20K miles, then felt guilty at 25K and took it in for the 20K service - would have hoped the service guys would have looked for something like this to be happening).
Thanks for any suggestions.
