VIGGEN transmission...grrr

As a huge Saab enthusiast, I'm really TRYING to love this car, but it keeps DISSING me :_)
The transmission has been dissapointing all along, clunky, impossible to shift quickly without forcing it through the gates) but a new problem has been emerging....
When I move the shifter from neutral into 1st there's a "thump" that's getting worse over time. It happens JUST as I move the shifter away from the neutral point. I mentioned it to the dealer when I first felt it, but they seem not to be able to see/hear/feel any problems I suggest to them until they BREAK :) Now it's getting annoying and I"m going to take it in and HOPE they can identify it. My best hope is when I recommend some things for them to check... synchros? thrust bushings? I'm not a good transmission/linkage person so I need all your big brains.
The feel of the whole transmission is getting thumpier and jerkier over time (I've been driving standard for 20 years and have never had transmission problems with Honda/VW/BMW nor my original '78 saab 99 turbo. Again, its one of those subjective things that only drives you crazy when you're driving in stop and go traffic, and I expect them to give me that blank stare at the dealership :) Do Viggens have problems with transmission mounts or CV joints?
Any ideas what I should ask them to look at? (and don't say my head :)
Thanks.
Earl
