I don't know if our two experiences are similar, but this is what was going on with my car.
I had reported to the service manager over the period of two years that my 99 9-3 SE was having really crappy idle problems. They ended up checking and changing vacuum hoses and parts, they checked the plugs and changed them. Even tested the DI and replaced it after they found that there was a reported misfire on one of them. The problem still persisted.
What it ended up being was a 10 dollar air intake valve. I guess I had been driving around with a faulty one since I had my car. This intake valve was messing up the fuel management system and causing all the problems that I was experiencing at idle, after I filled up the gas, causing my car to stall when I got of the freeways, etc.
Just thought I would throw this one out.
Good luck.
