In July 2001, I picked up at the factory one of the last of the 9-3 base coupes. The delivery experience was great -- picked up at the Goteborg airport in a new 9-5 wagon, a free night in the classy Ronnum Manor country hotel, a full briefing on the car and the factory and museum tour (loved the 1960's two stroke Erik Carlsson Monte Carlo rally cars). Savings were about $2,000 over the then-current street price for the car, over $4,000 on MSRP. Plus the savings on a comparable rental for the rest of the trip, which is significant as Euro rental prices go sharply upward if you want anything better or larger than a 1.4 liter economy car.
SAAB has several delivery specialists at the delivery center who you can email with all your questions and arangements. SAAB Atlanta put me in touch with them. They went out of their way to get me early info on my assigned VIN so I could complete my financing and not have the car sit waiting on the closing arrangements. The factory insurance deal is very good and the drop off at Saab's agent in Antwerp went well also. Saab shipped my car free all the way to Honolulu.
Then the best part -- a European road trip. Getting away from Sweden to Germany is a minor issue as it takes bridge tolls or ferries, about US$75. Sometimes the delivery center has discount coupons to giv eout for Stena Line to Germany from southern Sweden. The mix of autobahn raging, back roads and alpine passes is a driving experience that anyone interested in performance autos should do at some time in their lives. Gas is expensive, true, but you budget for it and make it part of the trip expense plan.
I am actually starting now to look into the prices for factory delivery on a new 9-3 for 2003 as a relative is interested in one and I want to use the car for a while when it is in Europe next summer for another road trip.
Email me for any other delivery or trip details.
