I took factory delivery of a base 9-3 coupe in July 2001 and had it for 2 months in Europe. A really great experience. My adult kids kids also came over and used it for a bit themselves and both traveled with me some. The factory is easy to get to from London by flying a cheap Ryanair one way to Goteberg-Save. Dropoff later for no extra cost in Antwerp and just take the Chunnel train back to London for return to the USA/Canada. The factory delivery center often has good discount coupons for Stena Line ferries from Sweden to Germany. From a distance, this looks like a complicated experience, but it all works very easy.
Two different experiences here. First, the Saab delivery and dropoff situations went very well with great help from the delivery center staff. Driving in Europe is also a memorable experience for anyone intersted in modern autos -- autobahn speeds, fast motoring on scenic country roads and up and down the Alps, all great experiences. A comparable size and performance rental car would be $600 plus fuel for a week in Europe. The only negative is the price of petrol, but just budget for that and expect it.
My car was ordered through Saab's military sales plan, which does not have the air travel benefits but is cheaper than the regular tourist delivery. Out of pocket costs about the same. Saab Euro road insurance is a good deal. Also note if you are financing the car, many banks and credit unions will not do such deals. Find one that does or get a personal loan and convert it into a car loan on arrival.
Euro delivery is Saab's best kept secret.
