Greg,
Personal opinion?
Growing up and having lived a majority of my life in Sweden, I have to say that the wipers are better. I believe that the changes from wipers to the high pressure washing system probably has to do with 1. Cost 2. Reliability 3. Swedens involvement in the EU and the elimination of many national laws (replaced by the union).
It should be noted though, that for a majority of the year the roads in Sweden are incredibly dirty, and cars seems to get covered in mud like dirt. I have never encountered anything similar in the continental USA, and cant imagine this ever being an important issue here. The washers should be plenty.
By the way, throughout the years there have been some very interesting wiper designs-especially on cars that utilized round headlamps. Alfa Romeos were notorious for their horrible 70's and 80's designs as they used centrally mounted wipers that spun in a circular manner. In short, they basically covered up all the light output and they broke frequently.
I hope this gives you an idea..
Magnus
