I don't have a fundamental problem with it but there are at least two concerns. I'll sick with the primary. If they are just going to use it in a few special models probably no issue. But if the trend woulb be to share out across many models they need to be sure it is economical to build and that seems often to mean targeting the the middle of the model range. I know at one point Ford was trying to figure out how they could develop the next s70 (or s80 not sure) platform such that they could also use it for the next Taurus. Don't know what became of that exercise but they reported to be having a very hard time figuring out how to alter things to economically use the platform for both products while meeting the standard they had set for the Volvo. So they were trying to figure out how to squeeze production cost out of the design to make it economical for the Ford without missing the target they wanted for the Volvo. The danger is that there is pressure to build down.
This build for the lower or middle of the model range is certainly consistent with GM past. Can you say Cadillac Cimeron? This might be an extreme but it really isn't an exception.
That doesn't mean I am pessimistic about such sharing just concerned. It could be a very positive thing and help SAAB earn it's keep. Also we all know we need more cars like this. Vehicles that deliver reasonable mileage and meet demands for relability and performance. So it can be a positive thing if people have their priorities set on the product not the bottom line.
