Neal-
Since we don't know what your weather is, it is hard to make recommendations. In upstate New York where we get a lot of snow and ice, I wouldn't dream of using anything but a dedicated "Studless" Snow tire. Even so called "M&S" or Mud and Snow tires don't do the job (my daughter's car is stuck in the driveway now with a good set of M&S's.)
I have Yokohama Guardex tires on my Saab and on one of my Jetta's. We have been real happy with those. The other Jetta just got a set of Green Diamond Ultra Grip tires and I like the looks of those a lot! So far they have been great. They are actually remanufactured tires so they were cheap(er) and have carbide bits in the tread for grip.
Strongly recommend you get another set of wheels for the snows so they are easy to swap at the end of the season. Go to a good junkyard for steel wheels. If they don't have Saab wheels, they may be able to substitute another wheel that meets the same standard -- maybe a Saturn wheel? Try to get decent hubcaps there too. The plastic ones at K-Mart don't last!
Good luck!
Ron
