1) The deposits you describe are normal. You should check the spark plug gap as the factory setting is not very accurate and is toward the large end of the tolerance band. A gap of 0.039" (1.0mm) is a bout right. Than the plug gap can wear from the low end of the spec. to the large end of the spec.
2)White smoke on start-up is normal. The catalytic converter makes lots of water vapor that has be removed. As the system warms up the water vapor becomes clear and not visible (except on really cold days).
