the bolts. I never followed up on it though, because I was kind of ticked off at the moment spending to much time without getting paid, and used some good ol bolts from another older engine.
After that, on all the headgaskets I have done, I have only tried the new bolts one more time.
And on that engine, I cleaned the surfaces very carefully with brake cleaner to remove any and all grease. Installed the bolts without ANY extra oil except the molycote coating that is there from the factory. And torqued them down using actually the old (higher)torque. They did hold up during the last 90 degree pull and it felt ok. But not as solid as the old style bolts.
The car haven't failed yet, and I keep a close watch on it.
I do know though, that if I get some of the newer cars in with seeping gasket, I will use brand new bolts instead of trying to retorque the old ones. Because, who knows how and what torque the bolts have had from factory in Sweden, since the amendment took quit awhile to show up here in US.
It might be that they cranked out 97-2000 cars using the old specs and the bolts now start to stretch.
