Or at least he isn't going to admit it. So what are his hot bottons? Why is he looking at an Accord? How would he equip this vehicle. You need to figure these out and match them one for one or render them mute.
Let's see 40 miles a day. What angles might work. How about:
Saftey - Both active and passive saftey
Active saftey. Such as excellect emergency handling and brakes. Very good seats and driving environment help here too. This is part of the fun equation as a bonus but it all makes for a safer more enjoyable drive. Defensive driving and a vehicle that can help you avoid harms way are fundamental to driving saftey.
Passive saftey. Such as outstanding crash results (see EuroCap for new 9-3), a history of very good real world accident statistics, and award winning head restraints that have significantly reduced neck injuries. Plus a long history of saftey inovations.
Economy - Decent fuel economy and decent power in a reasonable sized vehicle. Responsible plus a margin of saftey for merging.
Durablity - How many 10 year old Hondas would you even want to be driving let alone still enjoy driving and prefer over many new cars. Probably none. Most are pretty well rusted out around here at least by that time too. Also styles change every time you blink which makes them seem dated.
Value - A base 9^3SS is a reasonably equiped car and is in league with an Accord equiped (from features perspective) to approximate it. Focus on the engineering and saftey part of the value equation to justify it over the Honda. It then wins hands down. Stick with a base Linear as the target since that is probably the best hope and the vehicle that would best make the case.
