All jokes aside, I've known as many men as women who know little about cars. And, let's admit it, we men have the tendancy to get in over their heads with machinery, risking irreperable damage to our vehicles as we drunkenly wield mis-sized socket wrenches rather than pay 20 bucks to have the oil changed downtown. I suffered the consequences of my own mechanical learning curve, when the drive-shaft bolts began to pop out of my motorcycle at 75 mph soon after my self-performed engine swap. Luckily I had a 10 mm wrench under the seat...

I would rather buy a used car driven by a woman than a man. I'm sure evolutionary and cultural psychologists have a myriad of reasons why this is a sound preference.

Both my mother and father have done their share of oil changes and repairs on their cars, tractors, and motorcycles. My sister and father completed a frame-up restoration of an old car together. Perhaps our family is not the norm, but I never had the feeling that mechanical skill was at all determined by gender. Interest in automobiles (particularly fast ones), on the other hand, is stronger on the male side, and we'll attempt hairier operations.

A few years ago, I helped a couple in Spain whose scooter had broken down. Guess who had the carberetor dismantled, and was cleaning the spark plug when I approached? That's right, it was the girl. Her boyfriend stood watching disinterestedly. How's that for gender roles?

Best,

Lutfisk
