'99 9-3 Front End Bang/Shake...

Hi all-
First of all, I wanted to thank everyone that has helped us out in the past with my girlfriends car, which I know nothing about... I appreciate you taking the time to reply to my silly questions!!
Ok, now to my question:
Her '99 9-3 has developed some fairly distasteful habits this winter. The first is a VERY loud clunk/bang coming from the (front??) suspension upon the first few miles driven each day. After the car warms up or about 10 miles of driving, it goes away completely. I've seen a few reports of newer 9-3's with very few miles on them with broken struts- How likely were/are the '99's for a problem like that?? Any easy way to see if the strut is broken or where it would be broken at??
Next problem: Sounds IDENTICAL to JIM's post "Shake at 70" (down about 15 posts). The car accelerates fine through about 45. Once a steady speed is reached, and the accelerator is pressed, the steering wheel feels like it wants to jump right out of your hands. The thing {ShAkEs} badly. It will only get worse until you let off the gas. With cruise on, or holding a steady speed, the car seems very smooth. The tires are in very good condition and have been rotated, and there is no snow/ice frozen in the wheels. (parked in a heated garage) Any suggestions on what to look for here??? Could a possible strut problem cause this symptom as well? (maybe the two behaviors are related???)
Thanks again for your time and patience with a new Saab couple!!!!!
