I just trimmed out the inside pipe on my airbox, leaving the external pipe (or trumpet) intact.
Bear in mind I have the super thick paper element in mine still, but I can hear more of the turbo spooling and response seems maybe a tad better. Again, I suspect the paper element is robbing any effect opening the pipe up produced.
Prior to this endeavor I simply vented the tube with a half-inch spade bit on the top side of the interior tube. This pushed my boost into the tip of the red under WOT in 3-5 when starting from a low speed. I could reach top of the yellow at best beforehand. Same indicated boost after removing excess pipe.
Easy to try if you have a spiral saw. Takes maybe fifteen-twenty minutes to zip out the interior piece of the tube and clean up via sanding/utility knife.
Ultimately the full on 3" mod suggested by Dean/REM and others provides much, much more flow capacity.
