Well, I don't doubt that NHTSA has its problems, my point was just this...
of the following methods for getting a manufacturer to deal with a safety problem, which do you think is most effective?
1) Do nothing and hope that enough other people do something.
2) Rely on dealers informing the manufacturer
3) Rely on the manufacturer paying attention to the reports that come in from their customer releations department
4) Rely on the manufacturer noticing it "on their own" and issuing a volutary recall without prodding from a government agency.
5) Rely on the manufacturer scanning internet bulletin boards.
6) Wait for someone to file a product liability suit after one of their loved ones gets killed.
or 7) Report it to the appropriate government agency and encourage others with the same problem to do so as well.
Seems like a lot of the people with this stall problem are willing do everything above except #7
