I agree this seems a bit high for 'normal' driving on the interstate, esp given the A/C on (you should lose about 3MPG by running the AC).
Although our 9-3SS is not broken in yet (2200mi) and only has the 5 SP, I have been playing extensively with mileage on my 25mi (mostly interstate) trip to work. (we run 89 octane)
On the way to work (total vertical drop = 300 feet) I can average 36-37MPG but only if I coast extensively (down hills, exit ramps, etc). Headwind drops me another 1-2MPG depending on intensity. I also have to take full advantage of drafting in order to maintain this.
Return trip I can only average 34-35MPG. The overall figures seem to 'jive' with my hand calculations.
Let my wife drive the car on a similar course and she averages 29MPG (she has fairly 'typical' driving habbits and encounteres a little more traffic than I do)
So 40 might be possible, but only if your A/C wasn't actually running and you were drafting the whole way (or had a slight tailwind), and the road was flat enough the whole way so that your boost didn't get very high. Otherise I'd think the computer's results are skewed a bit in the 'optimistic' direction.
