I think its mostly about reflection of exhaust pulses from features like branches. Say you have 4 into 2 into 1 manifold/header, without the turbo. The 4-2 junction reflects a pulse which helps 'suck' the exhaust out of the other cylinder at a certain range of rpm. Same for the 2-1 junction, different rpm & different cylinders.
But with the turbine in there, that pulse reflection stuff should be all messed up, right? From there back it will look more like steady flow? In that case, a single bigger pipe should be better. Even with the same total area it'll have a larger hydraulic diameter.
