I was looking for better bass and clarity, but not loud volume. I had pretty good success with components in the front run off the head unit amp. I got Rockford Fosgate fanatic-p speakers with 6-1/2" woofers for about CDN$200. I put the woofers in the doors and replaced the existing dash speakers with the component tweeters. Installation wasn't too difficult. I cut into the existing front outputs from the head unit and put the crossovers behind the panel to the left side of the passenger footwell (where the loose ends of door speaker wires can be found). Richard Bevan's instructions on removing door panels, glovebox etc. were valuable. I had to make up spacer rings for the woofers, and mounting plates for the tweeters out of MDF board. You have to be methodical, and meticulous about the phasing (positive and negative leads)because you're making 12 connections, and if you get a phase wrong the sound will be really bad. The results were quite good: the R-F speakers have strong bass and good clear highs but are a bit weak in the middle. I also changed the rear speakers to Pioneer 6x9s - also cheap and not-bad sounding. The Pioneers have lots of midrange which is good for filling in the sound from the rear. Overall it's a huge improvement over the stock system. If you want volume out of this arrangement, though, you really need more power than the head unit amp.
