Just wanted to post my .02. 86 Jetta GLI, bought used, no major problems, but replaced idle regulator and rear axle, but it was an old car. Traded in for new 95 Jetta GLX. When I picked up the car so many plastic parts were broken. Maybe bad quality control at the Mexican plant for the new Jettas. Had the entire dashboard replaced over 4 yrs, speedometer included. Engine started idling rough around 12K, dealer replaced ignition coil pack, didn't solve the problem. Local mom and pop Bosch shop, diagnosed the problem, firing on four cylinders, couldn't solve the problem either. GLX started stalling in wet weather while driving, very dangerous, sold car to VW dealer in 2000. Feel sorry for whoever got stuck with that pile of $@#*. Leased 2000 SAAB 93 SE. Never had a problem with it, which was a dream. Leased 2003 Arc a month ago and absolutely love it, so far so good! IMO, reliability of VW does not even compare to reliability of the SAABs I've had. Maybe it's luck of the draw, as I've been reading about the stalling problems of other Arcs on this board. Keeping my fingers crossed...
