The A pillar is strong as hell! And the butt is high in the air. draw a line from the A pillar back to the back of the car and you'll see that most drivers are protected. As ASDF points out, rear drivers are suspect.
I had a friend who rolled an earlier model (900) '88ish vintage and the A pillars didn't give at all and only a crack in the windshield.
my thought is that all the lux or near lux convertibles are going to some kind of pop up roll bar. SAAB had to go there in order to sell product. basically adds weight and complexity and from an acturial risk stand point probably doesn't do much. To highlight this point My nearly new convertible cost me less to ensure than my Volvo 850 Wagon?! If you think about the kind of speed or impact (say with a semi truck for example)that it would require to roll you, it's doubtful those pop ups will do much for you anyhow.
In short, i think the pop ups highlight a market trend, not a deficiency. If you dig into some insurance institute data you can probably get at some interesting stuff on the subject. Good luck.
