9-5 would be slower

The base 2.3t 9-5 would be slower than your 1999 9-3, even though you don't have the HOT engine. The 9-5 just weighs a lot more.
Having owned both a manual 1999 9-3 HOT as well as my current 2002 9-5 Aero, I will say that because the suspension and cabin isolation in the 9-5 are so much better, the 9-5 actually doesn't feel as fast as it really is (assuming the 9-3 is your point of reference). I know empirically that my Aero is a LOT quicker than my old 9-3, even though it only feels a LITTLE quicker.
