Depends how good the electrical connections are.. I wash down my engine at almost every car washing. I simply squeeze the soapy sponge over the entire compartment and the spray the garden hose. I've been doing this for my cars since 91 and never had a problem. My current car, a 97 Pont Sunfire, has an engine compartment that looks brand new, with 97,000 miles. Alway get comments when it's in for service, which is a lot.. The reason I'm in this forum looking to purchase a 9-3..
