There are at least two issues to keep in mind in regards to wheel width and offset. One is fit (i.e., clearance) and other is steering geometry. As a rule if you are just changing wheel/tire width you generally want to stay close to the original offset assuming you believe the car manufacture had it right. Changing it significantly can alter feel, handling, and result in excesive tire and bearing wear and possible premature failures.
Dealers have fitment guides and can give you specific application information.
