The turbocharged 4 cylinder gasoline engines have a module on top of the engine which places four ingition coils directly on top of the spark plugs, along with various electronics. Because of the heat, these do not last forever.
The ID and ECU use the spark plug gaps to measure ionization properties in the combustion chambers. This allows the system to detect knocking conditions without using a conventional knock sensor. This is also used to detect the cam timing relative to the crankshaft, so that a cam position sensor is not required either.
The coil on the plugs was first seen that I know of, on the GM Quad 4 engine.
A turbo engine required a very robust ignition system, as the voltage required to fire the plugs goes up with pressure and when on boost, there certainly is a lot of that. Part of this required that the spark gaps also be smaller as well, which is common practice with turbo engines.
With the DI, the plugs have to be just right and many substitutions of other plugs cause problems.
The DI is attached with 4 torx screws and a screw driver in the trunk will do the job. Remove 4 screws and pull straight up. The electrical connector is easily removed too... if you know how.
