Gotta believe it the synchro's in your trans. I had same symptoms in my previous (non-Saab) car. I lived with it for a time doing exactly what one of your other respondants said, clutch & put shifter in 5th gear and then into reverse position. The interim move to 5th stops things from spinning so it won't grind when you move into reverse. It was a sychro problem. And it does continue to get worse.
Crossing my fingers. So far no griding on the Viggen at 53k miles.
