Purchased a 3 year-old '00 9-3 w/ 31,000 miles. Base with 5-speed.
First my question: I checked the warranty history with the local dealer. About a month ago (probably between owner turn in and sale to me) the center drive shaft was replaced. Does this mean anything? From my time working on a classic 900, I understand that to be the shaft which runs from the engine to the clutch plate (the pressure plate is engine side, right? Or is it the disc?). No note of clutch, engine or transmission work.
Aside from that, it got new emblems and a new SID at the same time. Wonder how long this SID will last... I've had one go at ~45,000 miles and it appears this one went less than 30,000. I was hoping it was old and would fail just before warranty end to maximize my time with a new one. Oh well.
Maint. note: Purchased the car on Thursday night. Friday night my DI cassette went. I was planning on purchasing one and storing it but didn't even get a chance! Anyway, got that replace this morning under warranty.
Deja-vu: 4 years ago I purchased a '96 900S 5-speed, 35000 miles. Same dealer, same place. 8 hours after purchase, the battery failed leaving me and my buddy Matt stranded. After that, it was a solid car. 4 years later, I purchase the '00 9-3 base 5-speed, 31000 miles. Same dealer, same place. 22 hours later, Matt comes over. Get in car. Dead DI cassette. Talk about deja-vu.
One final question on purchasing: My 9-3 was a local car but I bought from Poquet auto and not the local dealers. The interior and exterior are exceptionally clean. It's low mileage. The wheels are immaculate - no scraps even. The front paint has fewer chips and scraps than my '00 9-5 did at half the mileage... This all begs the question, WHY DIDN'T THIS GO TO A LOCAL DEALER TO BE CERTIFIED??? I'd guess it was a lease given the timing and that given it's local history, it was received by Morries or Schmelz. Can't they avoid auction and take it internally, skimming the cream of the crop for "certification"? The certified car I looked at (identical, same color, options, etc) was far, far less clean than this one.
Thanks,
Bryce
