search-key: 9.3.g1_tech

When writing a technical FAQ put "9.3.g1_tech" in it so people can search for it more easily. When you tell someone what to search for, type something like "9.3.g1<underscore>tech" so those non-tech posts don't show up in a search.

Background:

For some reason the 9³ hydraulic clutch has to be bled backwards.  The normal procedure that has always worked on my other cars lets air into the system.  I’m not sure but maybe it gets sucked into the master cylinder at the piston shaft.

This pushes the old fluid into the reservoir. You might want to do this just before bleeding the brakes so everything is fresh when you're all done.

Special Tools & Supplies:

A sealed bottle of DOT 4 brake fluid.

You’ll need a pump or syringe to pump brake fluid into the bleed screw. I used a MityVac bleeding kit, but I filled the cup with fresh fluid & switched the pump to pressure.  Others have used big veterinary syringes or pump-type oilcans that are new & clean.

You’ll want something like a turkey baster to suck fluid out of the reservoir.  But don’t ever use it again in the kitchen. I have a battery hydrometer that I broke the float...

Procedure:

Locate the clutch bleed screw on top of the bellhousing, sort of underneath the power-steering reservoir. I needed room to work, so I removed the air duct from the intercooler to the throttle-body.  Radiator hoses can be pushed out of the way.

Remove the cap for the brake fluid reservoir, set it aside. Remove most of the fluid, but don’t allow air into the brake master cylinder. Pump your fresh fluid just enough to remove air from the hose. Attach the hose to the bleed screw and put a rag under the bleed screw. Open the screw a good bit; my first time I didn’t open it very far and most fluid came out through the bleeder threads instead of pumping into the system. Pump your fresh fluid into the bleed screw, and it will flow towards the master cylinder and into the reservoir.

Notes & questions:

Thanks to a thread by Stratmoen, TG, & Damien.

The actual slave cylinder is located a few inches below the bleed screw. You can see it by taking off the plastic cover just below the bleeder. The only way I know to get fresh fluid worked into the actual slave, is to pump the clutch pedal repeatedly, and then reverse-bleed some more. Anybody have a better idea for that?

Where/how does the air get in? I got air in my clutch by pumping the pedal. I suspect(?) that if you use a pressure bleeder at the reservoir maybe that'll work OK. Anyone know for sure? Maybe the reservoir has a small walled-off part for the clutch and maybe I pumped it empty?
