I run 17" wheels in the summer and 16" wheels in the winter. Because we have potholes during the winter my (and a lot of others) feelings are that you are less likely to bend a 16" rim with a decent sidewall rather than a 17" rim with a thin (low profile) sidewall.

Also, if I bend the 16" wheel or blow out a 16" tire, it will be cheaper to have fixed or replace.

An added bonus is that you get what I call "extended life" out of your 17" tires since you aren't putting as many miles on them as quickly as you would if you were running them year round. Also, you don't have to go through the hassle of having the snow tires mounted and balanced on the rims in the Fall and the performance tires mounted and balanced on the rims in the Spring. This usually runs ~ $80 each time in my area.
