9-3 vs. classic 900

Greetings:
I have owned my 1990, 900s since it was new. Needless to say, I have loved the car. Fun to drive, safe, comfortable, solid and lots of room. I need to get a replacement due to extensive repair needs. My first thought was to get a CE 900 with low miles. However I have since driven a friends 2000, 9-3 SE and appreciated that car very much too. A 1993 CE 900 would be around 6,000, and a 2000 9-3 can be picked up for around 10,000, so they aren't as far apart in price as I would have thought (old ones are more sought after, less available??)
My issue is this, I have heard that the 9-3s are not as reliable as the old 900s, what do you think?
What other differences come to mind between the two cars.
Thanks in advance, this site has been very helpful over the years (heat xchange valve, brake pedal switch, fuel pump, clutch, tire debates, power window repairs, etc., etc., etc....)
