41k unusually early for serpentine belt cracking?

I had my '99 9-3 (41k mi) in for a warranty service item one day last week. Later in the day the advisor (who I generally trust) calls me and said the tech noticed the serpentine belt was starting to crack. "you can probably let it go for a few thousand miles but know that its starting to fray/crack". To be on the safe side, I told him to go ahead and replace the belt and tensioner pulleys (which he said should be replaced at the same time as the belt) to the tune of $330 (curse not having time to do my own work anymore!). I asked for all the parts back, but they (conveniently?) only gave me the pulleys - not the belt.
As I said I generally trust this service advisor but I wonder if 41k is unusually early for the serpentine belt to wear out. Thoughts?
