saab rear brake rotors...notched for balance?

I just purchased two rear brake rotors for my '00 9-3 Eeuroparts.com. Each looks like a small area has been machined out on the edge of each disc, creating a small flat spot. Is this supposed to be there? They are telling me that the mfr. shaves off a small portion to be certain that they are perfectly balanced. Is this accurate? Has anyone seen this before? I would think that this would affect the way that the pads wear, apparently not?
