In my C900, I have become used to hanging on to each of the gears for about the same length of time during a typical 1-5 cycle. Granted, it's not a turbo. So when I bought my 9-3, the gears really took some getting used to. I find that first is uncomfortably short, where I'm redlined in an instant it seems. I don't even use 1st unless at a total stand-still, and then its just used to get me to 2nd with sufficient rpms to maintain torque.
However, 2nd gear in this car is a thing of beauty. When in the mood to fly, I carry 2nd from about 20mph straight through 60; and with an SMBC installed that all happens in a flash. It feels like the real working gear in the tranny. Then 3rd carries me straight into "lose-license" speeds, at which point 4th and 5th become just a means of cruising more comfortably or attaining "mandatory jail time" speeds ;-)
So to me it "feels" like 2nd and 3rd are considerably taller than 1st, just because of the way the gear ratio forces me to drive "comfortably."
