...unless you have some highly modified engine.
For performance driving an otherwise normal engine, you want to keep your revs within the powerband, which (I'm guessing) is between 2500 and 3500 rpm. Over-revving does absolutely nothing but make stupid noise and increase wear, and in fact is counter-productive since torque, and efficiency, drop off outside the band.
